HELLENIC SHIPPING NEWS: Shipping & The Law conference draws maritime royalty to Naples

Influencers and thought leaders from across the maritime industry convened in Naples to take part in the 8th edition of Shipping & The Law.

Held in the 17th century splendour of the Court Theatre at the Royal Palace of Naples and organised by Studio Legale Lauro the event was hosted by Managing Partner Francesco S Lauro, the conference saw participation of a number of leading figures from shipowning, finance, law, insurance from Naples and around the world.

A series of panels and interviews interspersed with keynotes from leading industry practitioners saw discussion of the threats and opportunities in shipping, including the rise of China, the effects of climate change as well as free trade and protectionism in the era of Brexit and the Trump administration.

“Through its eight editions, Shipping and the Law has become much more than a maritime conference, it is a forum for the Naples shipping community to exchange ideas and debate with the industry at large,” said Managing Partner Francesco S Lauro. “Once again, some of the leading thinkers and practitioners shared their views on the critical topics affecting the entire shipping cluster and I thank them for their participation.”

Speakers included ECSA President elect Panos Laskaridis, Confitarma President elect Mario Mattioli, ICS Chairman Esben Poulsson, President of the Antwerp Port Authority, Marc Van Peel and Magda Kopczynska, Director of Waterborne Transport, European Commission Former Director of the IOPC Funds Måns Jacobsson spoke on the impending review to the Fund’s policy on economic loss from oil spills and President, Associazione Italiana di Diritto Marittimo Giorgio Berlingieri shared the main outcomes of the CMI 2017 in Genoa.

The conference also included keynote interviews, which saw Tradewinds’ columnist Terry Macalister in conversation with Banchero Costa founder Lorenzo Banchero and Bianco D’Antonio interview local shipping legend Peppino D’Amato.

The two-day proceedings included sessions focussing on ports and ship finance as well as legal and arbitration issues, the future for family-owned Italian shipping companies and the path towards a more digital, smart shipping future.

The eighth edition of the international Shipping and the Law conference, organised by Studio Legale Lauro, will take place on October 12 and 13 at the Court Theatre of the Royal Palace of Naples.

The conference will include participation from a number of leading figures from shipowning, finance, law, insurance and other players from around the world. The conference concludes with a Gala Dinner in the Apartments of the Royal Palace, hosted by CR MAG and SMIT.

The conference procedings will be officially opened on October 12, followed by a welcome from well-known Naples lawyer and conference organiser Francesco S Lauro. It will be followed by a roundtable: Full Steam Ahead in the Age of Uncertainty on important challenging topics, among them the threats and the opportunities for European operators in the context of the rise of maritime China and other Asian countries.

The panel will also consider how the maritime world confronts global warming and the future of shipping in the age of growing protectionism, particularly the uncertainty created by Donald Trump, Brexit and other new political movements.

This session will include contributions from the president of the International Chamber of Shipping Esben Poulsson, the president elect of the European Community Shipowners Associations (ECSA) Panos Laskaridis, the president of Confitarma Emanuele Grimaldi, the president elect of Confitarma Mario Mattioli, the director for Waterborne Transport in Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport within the European Commission Magda Kopczynska.

Also taking part will be past presidents of the Union of Greek Shipowners and of the ECSA John C. Lyras and Thomas Rehder, chief economist of the Sheikh Yamani’s Center for Global Energy Studies Leo Drollas, the president of Banchero Costa Lorenzo Banchero, political analyst Roberto D’Alimonte, RINA CEO Ugo Salerno and member of the UK House of Lords Baroness Byrony K. Worthinghton.

The morning session will be moderated by Terry Macalister of Tradewinds and David Osler, Finance Editor of Lloyd’s List.

After lunch hosted by Palumbo Group, the conference proceedings will continue with a session dealing with shipping and port infrastructure finance with the participation of owners, bankers and investment fund managers, as well as the president of the Port Authority and vice-mayor of Antwerp Marc Van Peel and president of the Port Authority of Naples Pietro Spirito.

Among others, the president and the president elect of the Italian Young Owners Andrea Garolla and Giacomo Gavarone will take part to the proceedings.

The morning session on October 13 Law and Shipping will be opened by former International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) Funds Director Mans Jacobsson’s keynote addess on Compensation for pure economic loss in relation to tanker oil spills. Past president of London Maritime Arbitrators’ Association Clive Aston will introduce a roundtable with CMI vice president Giorgio Berlingieri, Ince’s Ian Cranston, General Counsel Scorpio Group Luca Forgione; arbitrator and mediator St Philips Stone Chambers Jonathan Lux and Hill Dickinson partner David Pitlarge.

The final session of the conference Better Vessels for a Better World, moderated by Umberto D’Amato and Alberto Moroso, will be dedicated to new technologies. Participants will include a representative of Tefin who will speak on a new system to prevent fires on ro-ro vessels, while Board member of Caronte & Tourist Lorenzo Matacena will talk on gas propulsion. Among the speakers there will be also representatives of Wärtsilä, WindDG, ABB, as well as Ecospray’s Franco Porcellacchia.

A post conference programme will follow on the island of Ischia commencing in the evening of Friday October 13 and concluding on the afternoon of Saturday 14.

Hellenic Shipping News, October 18th 2016 – The 7th edition of Shipping and the Law conference, organized by Studio Legale Lauro, will take place 25-26 October, bringing together industry leaders and decision-makers from around the world.

The conference, in which over 200 shipowners, bankers, maritime lawyers, underwriters and other leaders of the Italian and European shipping scene are participating, will begin on Tuesday the 25th October with a welcoming address by Francesco S. Lauro and opening speeches delivered by ‎President of Confitarma Emanuele Grimaldi, Chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping Esben Poulsson, Secretary General Emeritus of the International Maritime Organization Efthimios Mitropoulos and Ammiraglio di Squadra Donato Marzano, Commander in Chief of the Italian Navy fleet.

The Opening Session titled “Energy and Shipping” follows opening speeches and will include a panel focusing on oil and gas market trends and macroeconomic perspectives on the price of oil and its relationship to shipping and shipping markets.

Leading opinion-makers and industry leaders from Italy, Europe and around the world will once again gather in Naples for the sixth edition of Shipping & The Law on 15th and 16th October 2015.

On the morning of Thursday 15th October, IMO Secretary General Emeritus, Efthimios Mitropoulos, will open the conference with a keynote speech on Recent Developments in International Shipping.

This year, the newly-elected Presidents of two leading industry associations, Thomas Rehder of the European Community Shipowners Association and Esben Poulsson of the Singapore Shipowners Association, will join key personalities and previous attendees Emanuele Grimaldi, President of the Italian Shipowners Association, and John C. Lyras, former President of Greek and European Community Shipowners Association. John C. Lyras and Esben Poulsson both currently serve as Vice Chairmen of the International Chamber of Shipping.

The former English Court of Appeal judge Sir Bernard Eder will speak on the Astra/Spar Shipping decisions. Former Director of the Oil Pollution Limitation Fund, Mans Jacobsson will consider whether international treaties result in the uniformity of Maritime Law and Jonathan Lux of Stone Chambers will speak on the relationship between arbitration and mediation.

Principal of Studio Legale Lauro, Francesco S. Lauro, who will chair the opening session, says the programme for this year’s conference will provide a rich and varied commentary on the issues affecting the maritime industry in Europe and beyond.

“Our programme considers immediate and pressing issues including the humanitarian emergency posed by the Mediterranean migration crisis, new scenarios arising from the enlargement of Suez Canal, the challenges posed by the imbalance between shipbuilding capacity and shipping demand”.

Innovation and implementation of new technologies, maritime security and the environmental regulatory framework will also be considered.

“In addition, current trends in ship finance and debt restructuring, new competition requirements and changes in regulations, current trends in marine insurance and liability regulations, recent judicial and arbitration trends decisions contractual and in tort will be discussed and debated,” adds Lauro.

More than 150 participants including shipowners, bankers and other industry leaders, are expected at the event which begins on the morning of 15 October with a finance session in which some of the most active banks and funds involved in the shipping industry will participate.

Thursday evening sees a black tie Gala Dinner hosted in a XVI century Palace which belonged to the scholar and collector Gaetano Filangieri, now a private museum which will reopen after many years for the event.

The Conference itself will be held in a jewel of the Neapolitan architecture, the octagonal chapel of Pio Monte della Misericordia where delegates will be able to admire, among other important works of art, one of the most magnificent masterpieces of the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio’s ‘The Seven Acts of Mercy’.

The event concludes on Friday evening with an informal outdoor reception on the Bay of Naples.

The former English Court of Appeal judge Sir Bernard Eder will speak on the Astra/Spar Shipping decisions. Former Director of the Oil Pollution Limitation Fund, Mans Jacobsson will consider whether international treaties result in the uniformity of Maritime Law and Jonathan Lux of Stone Chambers will speak on the relationship between arbitration and mediation.

Principal of Studio Legale Lauro, Francesco S. Lauro, who will chair the opening session, says the programme for this year’s conference will provide a rich and varied commentary on the issues affecting the maritime industry in Europe and beyond.

“Our programme considers immediate and pressing issues including the humanitarian emergency posed by the Mediterranean migration crisis, new scenarios arising from the enlargement of Suez Canal, the challenges posed by the imbalance between shipbuilding capacity and shipping demand”.

Innovation and implementation of new technologies, maritime security and the environmental regulatory framework will also be considered.

“In addition, current trends in ship finance and debt restructuring, new competition requirements and changes in regulations, current trends in marine insurance and liability regulations, recent judicial and arbitration trends decisions contractual and in tort will be discussed and debated,” adds Lauro.

More than 150 participants including shipowners, bankers and other industry leaders, are expected at the event which begins on the morning of 15 October with a finance session in which some of the most active banks and funds involved in the shipping industry will participate.

Thursday evening sees a black tie Gala Dinner hosted in a XVI century Palace which belonged to the scholar and collector Gaetano Filangieri, now a private museum which will reopen after many years for the event.

The Conference itself will be held in a jewel of the Neapolitan architecture, the octagonal chapel of Pio Monte della Misericordia where delegates will be able to admire, among other important works of art, one of the most magnificent masterpieces of the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio’s ‘The Seven Acts of Mercy’.

The event concludes on Friday evening with an informal outdoor reception on the Bay of Naples.

Shipping and The Law 2014 tackles the challenges of survival and success

Over the past five years, Shipping and the Law has developed a reputation as Italy’s leading maritime industry conference building a reputation for high quality debate in a friendly and informal atmosphere.

Organized by law firm Studio Legale Lauro, the conference takes place on October 7 and 8 in Naples, home to more than half of Italian tonnage.

Participants include shipowners, as well as leaders from other sectors including bankers, charterers, underwriters and P&I Club managers, leading maritime lawyers and international shipping arbitrators.

A new feature of this year is a pre-conference workshop entitled, Eco-ships: Investing in Technologies, organized in association with the Italian Young Shipowners at Confitarma and ATENA, co-chaired by their presidents Andrea Garolla and Alberto Moroso.

A panel including Scorpio’s Emanuele Lauro, RINA and BV CEOs, Ugo Salerno and Didier Michaud-Daniel and LR’s Apostolos Poulovassilis, will follow technical papers and a paper presented by conference organiser Francesco S. Lauro, on drafting successful Eco-Ship newbuilding and retrofit contracts.

The full-day conference follows on October 8, with a programme including an opening panel session, Global Challenges and Strategic Decisions in the Current Shipping Markets, featuring Co-CEO of Grimaldi Group and President of Confitarma Emanuele Grimaldi, Past President of ECSA John C. Lyras, President of Fincantieri Vincenzo Petrone, Scorpio CEO Emanuele Lauro and Managing Partner of RS Platou Richard Fulford-Smith.

Francesco S. Lauro, who will chair the opening session, said:

“Now more than ever, the industry faces the need to take decisions which could make the difference between survival and success for some players and extinction for others. Successfully addressing changes in technologies, environmental regulations or in the cost of energy, as well as in changing geo-political and economic scenarios, is essential. Nobody can see in the future but all must make their best bet. A lot of capital, some of it from unconventional sources, will be needed by the winners while the losers will destroy much of it. Shipping and the Law will be a great opportunity to hear, from some of the most important players in their respective fields, their opinions on the hottest issues the industry faces today.”

The Ship Finance Session will be co-chaired by Jeffrey Pribor, Head of Maritime Investments at Jefferies, and Paolo d’Amico, CEO of d’Amico di Navigazione and Past President of Confitarma, and will include the participation of representatives from among the major shipping banks, as well as private equity investors and funds.

The Insurance, P&I, H&M Session will be co-chaired by Mauro Iguera, Managing Director of CR Marine & Aviation, and Federico Deodato, Managing Director of PL Ferrari & Co. The CEO of the Norwegian Club, John Wiik, will give a presentation on the subject of ‘Market volatility and innovation in marine insurance’ in addition to papers presented by representatives of the North Of England Club and Swiss-Re.

Finally, the Charterparty, Shipbuilding Contracts and Disputes, and S&P Agreements session will be co-chaired by Francesco Berlingieri, Honorary President of the CMI and Clive Aston, President of the LMAA. In this section, Mans Jacobsson, Former Director of the Oil Pollution Compensation Funds, will give a presentation entitled ‘The Prestige incident – some important court judgements’.

The event includes a Gala Dinner on October 8 which will take place at the aristocratic Circolo Nazionale dell’ Unione, part of the historic Opera House of San Carlo, located in the Royal Palace of Naples. The conference venue locations chosen for 2014 is the Baroque-styled Donnaregina Nuova, located in the heart of Naples and the Palazzo du Mesnil, a historical building overlooking the Bay of Naples.
