Industry leaders from around the world gather in Naples for Shipping & The Law
Leading opinion-makers and industry leaders from Italy, Europe and around the world will once again gather in Naples for the sixth edition of Shipping & The Law on 15th and 16th October 2015.
On the morning of Thursday 15th October, IMO Secretary General Emeritus, Efthimios Mitropoulos, will open the conference with a keynote speech on Recent Developments in International Shipping.
This year, the newly-elected Presidents of two leading industry associations, Thomas Rehder of the European Community Shipowners Association and Esben Poulsson of the Singapore Shipowners Association, will join key personalities and previous attendees Emanuele Grimaldi, President of the Italian Shipowners Association, and John C. Lyras, former President of Greek and European Community Shipowners Association. John C. Lyras and Esben Poulsson both currently serve as Vice Chairmen of the International Chamber of Shipping.
The former English Court of Appeal judge Sir Bernard Eder will speak on the Astra/Spar Shipping decisions. Former Director of the Oil Pollution Limitation Fund, Mans Jacobsson will consider whether international treaties result in the uniformity of Maritime Law and Jonathan Lux of Stone Chambers will speak on the relationship between arbitration and mediation.
Principal of Studio Legale Lauro, Francesco S. Lauro, who will chair the opening session, says the programme for this year’s conference will provide a rich and varied commentary on the issues affecting the maritime industry in Europe and beyond.
“Our programme considers immediate and pressing issues including the humanitarian emergency posed by the Mediterranean migration crisis, new scenarios arising from the enlargement of Suez Canal, the challenges posed by the imbalance between shipbuilding capacity and shipping demand”.
Innovation and implementation of new technologies, maritime security and the environmental regulatory framework will also be considered.
“In addition, current trends in ship finance and debt restructuring, new competition requirements and changes in regulations, current trends in marine insurance and liability regulations, recent judicial and arbitration trends decisions contractual and in tort will be discussed and debated,” adds Lauro.
More than 150 participants including shipowners, bankers and other industry leaders, are expected at the event which begins on the morning of 15 October with a finance session in which some of the most active banks and funds involved in the shipping industry will participate.
Thursday evening sees a black tie Gala Dinner hosted in a XVI century Palace which belonged to the scholar and collector Gaetano Filangieri, now a private museum which will reopen after many years for the event.
The Conference itself will be held in a jewel of the Neapolitan architecture, the octagonal chapel of Pio Monte della Misericordia where delegates will be able to admire, among other important works of art, one of the most magnificent masterpieces of the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi Da Caravaggio’s ‘The Seven Acts of Mercy’.
The event concludes on Friday evening with an informal outdoor reception on the Bay of Naples.
