Tirrenia – Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione
Tirrenia, is the oldest shipping company in Italy and one of the most ancient in Europe, as it was founded on the 21st of December of 1936 in Naples and it is still operating under the same name. The company that has been owned by the Italian state, during its 70 years of operation has acquired the control of the most prestigious shipping companies of the time, such as the Italia di Navigazione, the Florio fleet and the Adriatica shipping company.
In the year 2010, the company collapsed under a debt of 650 million of euro and the government decided to privatize it. On the 21st of July 2012, after 2 years of compulsory administration and two unsuccessful allotments of contracts, Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione acquired Tirrenia and its fleet investing 380 million of Euro.
Today Tirrenia Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione is considered one of the main European Shipping Operators and a leading ferry company in the Mediterranean sea. The company hosts a fleet of 16 ships among Cruise Ferry and Ro-Ro Pax, that is one of the most modern in the Mediterranean (all the boat were built after the year 2k). Tirrenia have 1.800 employee and holds the public service connection with the larger islands, ensuring territorial continuity to residents of Sardinia, Sicily and the Tremiti Islands departing all the day of the year.
Connections performed in Tyrrhenian Sea link Sardinia (from and to Porto Torres, Olbia, Arbatax and Cagliari Harbours) to Genova, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Napoli, Palermo and Trapani to whose are added Napoli and Palermo. As far as Adriatic Sea where the company connects Ravenna to Catania and the wonderful Tremiti Islands to the city of Termoli.
